Chelsea Service Teams

“Serving our school, serving our community” is the motto behind the Chelsea Prep Service Teams.

Seven years ago, Chelsea Prep took the bold step in abolishing the somewhat old-fashioned Prefect system and adopting a ‘Service Team’ programme instead. Instrumental in this changeover was Deputy Principal Sandy Williams who agrees that while the system has been a work in progress and continues to evolve, as the School’s needs change, it is a far more beneficial system to all involved.

Contrary to the Prefect system, which gave only twenty or so pupils an opportunity to hold a position, the Service Team programme affords every pupil in grade 7 the privilege to serve on a team of their choice and interest. At the end of grade 6 the pupils complete an application to serve in one of eleven teams, and are then carefully placed in a respective team of their choice.

Each team serves a unique function within the Chelsea family and community with the emphasis on serving and giving back to others, thereby promoting the School’s value system. The teams range greatly in their functions and individual identity, from Environment to Technology, Recycling to Events, Sports to Art, they allow opportunities for every pupil to shine. The variety allows pupils to participate in an area where they have a genuine interest or aptitude and can make a positive difference in the lives around them. The teams each appoint two leaders who hold regular meetings. The leaders chair the meetings complete with agendas and compulsory minutes. A team such as ‘School Pride’ performs duties such as; raising the flag daily, changing the weekly values board and promoting pride in their school, good manners and a litter free campus. The ‘Sound Team’ is responsible for setting up all sound equipment for assemblies and functions and playing music on the field every Friday at break time. The ‘Media Team’ promotes a love of reading, media displays and they assist with the smooth running of the Media Centre in an efficient and vibrant way.

A popular team is ‘Earlyact’ who are involved in charity and community work. In just four months they have already; held a new pupils’ tea, run a charity tea garden, visited Milldene retirement village with cards and treats and made regular visits to Domino Babies Home, have held craft activities for grade 4 pupils, and continue to man a ‘Buddies’ table at break for pupils who struggle to make friends, are knitting scarves for charity, collect weekly prayers from pupils for the Mom’s prayer group, and are presently busy with an ‘ice-bucket challenge’ to raise funds to paint an underprivileged school!

With each team having its own specially unique character, it gives every child a sense of purpose so that when they leave Chelsea at the end of grade 7 they have not just participated in the normal sport, cultural and academic programmes, but can also truly feel that they have made a worthwhile contribution to Chelsea life, and learnt valuable skills in the process.

There is no doubt that the Service Team system does require an extra load on the Chelsea teaching staff, however all agree that it is worth the extra effort. The idea is to teach children not to say, “What can my school do for me?” but rather, “What can I give back to my school and community and make a difference?”

This programme truly is a successful one, and should be an inspiration to others, both young and old.
